相传在春秋时期，晋国一个贵族范氏因为被其他四家贵族联合攻打，只好逃到齐国。有个小偷就想趁机偷范氏家的一口大钟，但那钟太大太重了，他怎么搬也搬不动。于是，他就打算把钟砸碎了再背走，可他一敲钟，就发出响亮的声音。他害怕别人听到跑来抢，于是他急忙就用手捂住耳朵。他以为自己只有捂着耳朵听不见，别人也会和他一样听不到，于是他继续敲钟，结果引来了很多人，被当场抓住了。

以上就是《掩耳盗铃》的典故由来，意思是用来比喻自己欺骗自己或掩盖真相的行为。比如考试作弊被老师抓到还死不承认错误，或在工作中犯了失误却推卸责任，或生活中对某些问题视而不见或逃避解决，以上这样行为都属于是在“掩耳盗铃”。

According to legend, during the Spring and Autumn Period in ancient China, a nobleman named Fan from the state of Jin had to flee to the state of Qi after being attacked by a coalition of four other noble families. A thief saw an opportunity to steal a large bell from Fan's family, but the bell was too big and heavy for him to carry away. He decided to smash the bell and take it piece by piece, but each time he hit the bell, it made a loud sound. Fearing that others would hear and come to steal the big bell from him, he covered his ears. He thought that if he couldn't hear the sound, others wouldn't be able to either, so he continued to hit the big bell. However, this attracted many people, and he was caught red-handed.

The above is the origin of the allusion to " plug one’s ears while stealing a bell", which means that it is used as a metaphor for the act of deceiving oneself or covering up the truth.
