Hello everyone! Welcome to my channel. Today I want to share with you a Chinese idiom story called " mere copycat "
According to legend, during the Spring and Autumn Period, there was a beautiful woman named Xi Shi in the state of Yue. Her beauty was so stunning that it left everyone who saw her in awe. Her every move and gesture was captivating, causing people of all ages to stop and admire her beauty. She was known as the "beauty that could sink fish" because one day, while washing her clothes by the river, her reflection in the clear water was so beautiful that the fish in the water were entranced and stopped swimming, sinking to the bottom of the river. From that day on, people praised Xi Shi for her "fish sinking beauty" , and later, "fish sinking" became a way to describe a woman's beauty.
As the story goes, once Xishi suffered from a heartache and walked around the village with her chest covered with a frown. When people in the village saw her like this, they felt even more beautiful and attractive. At that time, there was an ugly-looking woman named Dong Shi in the east village. She saw Xi Shi being praised and envied by the people, so she thought she would try to follow her example. So Dong Shi also frowned and covered her chest and walked around the village, but the result was very different. The rich people in the village closed their doors and windows upon seeing her, and the poor people avoided her.
Dongshi only saw the action of Xishi holding her chest with a frown, but did not realize that Xishi was already naturally beautiful and had a pitiful and adorable temperament. The East Shih is ugly, and does not have that temperament and charm, which is why everyone is hiding away. Instead of adding to her charm, Dong Shi's blind imitation makes her even more ugly and ridiculous.
The above is the origin of the allusion to “mere copycat”, which means that it is used to compare those who blindly imitate others and imitate haphazardly with extremely poor results, not only failing to achieve the imagined purpose, but also making themselves look ugly and disgraceful. At the same time, this idiom can also be used as a word of self-effacement, indicating that one's own roots are poor, learning from the strengths of others but not yet learned, and still need to continue to work hard.
This story tells us that we must recognize the differences between ourselves and others, discover our own strengths and choose the right way to do things or express ourselves according to our own conditions, instead of blindly imitating others or following the trend. Only in this way can we truly bring out our strengths and succeed.
In addition, this idiom also teaches us to respect ourselves and others, maintain a sincere and humble attitude, and not plagiarize or maliciously slander others out of jealousy or vanity.
Finally, this story also teaches us to be confident and self-loveable, not to give up or give up on ourselves because of our shortcomings or inadequacies, and not to be complacent and then stagnant because of our strengths. Because only by constantly improving your inner and outer qualities can you have a chance to succeed, or you will never be successful in your life.
Well, that's it for today, bye.
