🌊 Trevone: Where the Land Fell In Love with the Sea
Nestled just east of Padstow, Trevone (Cornish: Treavon, “farmstead facing the stone”) is a coastal village steeped in quiet charm and dramatic geology. Once a sleepy farming hamlet, it blossomed into a seaside retreat in the 20th century, with its golden sands and fossil-rich cliffs drawing surfers, geologists, and curious wanderers alike.
But Trevone’s most jaw-dropping feature isn’t its beach—it’s the legendary Round Hole, a natural sinkhole perched above the bay like a forgotten portal to the underworld.
Formed over millennia, the Round Hole began as a sea cave beneath the headland. The relentless pounding of Atlantic waves hollowed it out until the roof finally collapsed, leaving behind a gaping void roughly 40 meters wide and 25 meters deep. Locals say you can hear the sea breathing through it on stormy nights, and some claim it’s the echo chamber of old Cornish sea spirits.
There’s no fencing—just a sloping field and a sheer drop—so visitors tread carefully, peering into nature’s own amphitheatre. It’s a geological marvel, a cautionary tale, and a poetic reminder that even the land can fall head over heels for the sea.
