Phase 05 - Retting

Before we can obtain and process our linen fibre, we have to put our flax through the retting process.

Retting separates the textile fibres from the central non-fibrous part of the stem (woody core), making it possible to use the fibres later on.
This is done through a controlled fermentation process, through which bacteria dissolve the pectic material that binds the textile fibres to the rest of the stem without damaging the fibres.
The retting process slightly alters the final properties of the flax fibres, such as their natural colour, strength and smoothness.
This phase is one of the most important in the flax-to-linen process, as it can make great linen or damage it irreversibly if done wrong, for too long or too little time.
