Phase 09 - Heckling
Heckling is the final step in linen fibre production and consists of combing the linen fibres. After heckling, fibres will be aligned and clean, ready to be spun into yarn.
This is achieved by passing the fibres through a comb - the heckle - with densely placed steel teeth. Most flax heckles feature areas with different teeth densities, so we can start with a lower density and progress to the finer area.
Most importantly, heckling separates the longer fibres from the shorter fibres that exist in the flax plant.
