VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Decreasing kids' pain can help improve the overall hospital experience and has been shown to positively benefit recovery too. As a part of the Comfort Promise at SickKids, babies will be offered the following four techniques to help reduce needle poke pain.
Numbing Cream. Numbing cream helps to reduce needle poke pain by numbing the area that the cream is applied to. The cream will be placed on the baby's skin before the needle poke by their healthcare provider. Numbing cream needs at least 30 minutes to work and can stay on the skin for up to two hours. Please speak with our healthcare team if you want to buy numbing cream before your appointment.
Sucrose and breastfeeding. Sugar water and breastfeeding are both effective at reducing pain in infants up to 18 months of age. A few drops of sugar water can be placed on your baby's pacifier or directly on their tongue just before and during the needle poke procedure.
Comfort positioning. Being in a more comfortable position can help kids of all ages relax and stay still during a painful procedure. Swaddling and holding the infant can also help reduce pain and make them feel safe during the procedure. Babies older than six months feel safer if they are able to sit up.
Distraction. Distraction is helpful for all ages to reduce pain. It shifts the baby's focus from the needle to something that is more soothing. Having someone sing, play or use the baby's favorite toy can help them focus on something other than the needle poke procedure. The healthcare team at SickKids will offer these techniques to all patients.
Parents, you know your child best discuss with your health care team to learn more and develop a Comfort Promise plan for your child.
