This is a 360 video of the archaeological site of Machaerus. This was a palace-fortress of Herod the Great. It's located on the east side of the Dead Sea in Jordan today, slightly to the north of Ein Gedi (in Israel) on the west wide. According to Hungarian archaeologist Győző Vörös, "Machaerus was the only royal palace that Antipas (one of Herod's sons) inherited from King Herod and as a symbol of his Herodian legacy it was the perfect place for his birthday party." According to Josephus (and described in Mark 6:14-29), on the day of Antipas' birthday, this was where John the Baptizer's head was brought to him on a platter. Why was his head cut off? Because John did not agree with Antipas’ divorce of his wife (the daughter of Aretas IV, the Nabaeatean King) so that he could marry his brother Philip’s wife.
Vörös suggests that he identified the "throne room" of the palace where the head was offered to Antipas. You will see it as the small semi-circular structure at the end of this video. It's a long walk to the top, but Machaerus is a great site and should be included in every Jordan trip!
