As Kerala moves closer to the Assembly elections, political equations are once again shifting. At the centre of the latest buzz is Kerala Congress (Mani) and its relationship with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s LDF government. Kerala Congress (Mani) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jose K. Mani has clearly stated that his party stands firmly with the Left Democratic Front. Speaking in Kottayam, he reminded everyone that it was the Congress led UDF that had earlier shown his party the door. However, political observers say the situation may not be that simple. Founded in 1964 by Christian leaders in central Travancore, the Kerala Congress has had a long and complicated history. Often described as a political hydra, the party has seen 14 splits and 12 mergers over the last 61 years. Traditionally backed by the Catholic Church and the Nair Service Society, Kerala Congress factions have usually aligned with the ruling coalition in Kerala’s bi-polar political system. The Kerala Congress (Mani) faction has been with the LDF since 2020 and currently has five MLAs. But with elections nearing, sources say the party faces a fresh loyalty test. There is talk that pressure from the Catholic Church is growing for a return to the UDF. Adding to the speculation, the Indian Union Muslim League, the second largest partner in the UDF, openly demanded last year that Kerala Congress (Mani) be brought back into the Opposition front. Within the party itself, opinions appear divided. Two MLAs, including Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine, are said to favour maintaining the current alliance with the LDF. For now, Jose K. Mani says there is no question of switching sides. But as Kerala heads into election mode, political ground realities may yet influence the final call.
