A Kannur man who spent nearly two months in jail for a crime he never committed has finally received a measure of justice, more than seven years later. V K Thajudheen, a native of Kannur and a Qatar based worker, was wrongly arrested in 2018 after Kerala Police mistakenly identified him as a chain snatcher using CCTV footage. On October 14, 2025, the Kerala High Court directed the state government to pay him 14 lakh rupees as compensation for his illegal arrest and custodial suffering. A copy of the court order was made public on January 8, 2026. The compensation includes 1 lakh rupees each for his wife and three children, acknowledging the mental trauma suffered by the entire family. Thajudheen’s ordeal began on the night of August 11, 2018, when he had returned to Kerala from Qatar for his daughter’s wedding. While returning home with his family, police detained him and took him to Chakkarakkal police station, where officers showed CCTV footage of a bearded man involved in a chain snatching incident. Despite repeated denials, police accused Thajudheen of being the person in the video. No material evidence was recovered. The police failed to find the stolen gold chain or the white scooter allegedly used in the crime. Even so, Thajudheen was named as the first accused and remanded to judicial custody. He spent 54 days in jail for a crime he did not commit. During the investigation, police paraded him through public roads in the name of evidence collection, an act that caused him severe mental humiliation. The arrest destroyed his livelihood. Because he could not return to Qatar on time, Thajudheen was later arrested again upon reaching there, detained for 23 days, and eventually deported to India. His business collapsed, leaving him financially and emotionally shattered. His innocence came to light only after police arrested Sarath Valsaraj, a habitual offender, in another chain snatching case. Investigators later confirmed that Sarath was the man seen in the CCTV footage. Police had earlier ignored crucial evidence proving Thajudheen’s innocence, including proof that he was at a beauty parlour with his daughter at the time of the crime. Justice P M Manoj, while delivering the verdict, said the compensation was meant to act as a deterrent against irresponsible police conduct. The court also ruled that the state government could recover the compensation amount from the erring officers after due procedure. A departmental inquiry found lapses by then sub inspector P Biju and assistant sub inspectors Yogesh and T Unnikrishnan. In an interview with "The News Minute", Thajudheen said that while justice was finally delivered, the pain still remains. He added that no amount of money could fully compensate for the physical, mental, and financial losses he suffered, and confirmed he would file a civil case against the officers responsible.
