• Make sure you know the right and wrong ways to say it, as well as its plain, down-to-earth meaning.
• The way of reality includes things we can only explain metaphysically. Thus, the Tao includes the spiritual domain as well.

The Tao that can be spoken…
• Make sure you attain total clarity on the first six characters of the Tao Te Ching — this is crucial. (道可道 非常道)
• Recognize the universal truth they point out, and be able to apply the truth to everything you do.

The text:

1 - 道可道 非常道 - The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao
2 - 名可名 非常名 - The name that can be named is not the eternal name
3 - 無名天地之始 - The nameless is the origin of Heaven and Earth
4 - 有名萬物之母 - The named is the mother of myriad things
5 - 故 常無欲 以觀其妙 - Thus, constantly without desire, one observes its essence
6 - 常有欲 以觀其徼 - Constantly with desire, one observes its manifestations
7 - 此兩者同出而異名 - These two emerge together but differ in name
8 - 同謂之玄 - The unity is said to be the mystery
9 - 玄之又玄 眾妙之門 - Mystery of mysteries, the door to all wonders
