What Causes Hand Pain and Numbness? It often depends on where the numbness is and what brings it on.
If it’s in the thumb, index, and middle fingers—especially at night or while driving—it might be carpal tunnel. If it's in the pinky and ring finger, especially when your elbow is bent, it could be cubital tunnel. And if it starts from the neck and goes all the way down, it may be coming from your spine.
Some people even have more than one problem causing their symptoms—what we call double crush syndrome.
