Listen to this episode of the One World, One Health podcast with OHT’s Dr. Thomas Van Boeckel as he explains how the inappropriate use of antibiotics in raising fish for food consumption (aquaculture) fuels the rise of drug-resistant superbugs around the world.
Because of crowded farming conditions, a large portion of the antibiotics used in aquaculture is administered to prevent illness rather than to treat infections. This drives the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance — a major public health threat.
Dr. Van Boeckel explains why aquaculture's rapid expansion due to the growth of seafood as a significant global nutrition source necessitates improved antimicrobial surveillance and stewardship in the industry.
