On May 14, 2023, Niles Police Officer Brines observed the driver of a Jeep Wrangler failing to stay in her lane. The police dash camera footage shows her repeatedly driving over the painted center line. Officer Brines initiated a traffic stop and the 23 year-old female driver immediately admits to coming from a bar. She is asked to step out of the vehicle to perform standardized field sobriety tests (FSTs). She thinks she passes the tests, but when the preliminary breath testing device comes out, she starts a debate with Officer Brines about her options. She loses the battle and finds herself in handcuffs, under arrest for DUI. She is transported to the police station, where a spirited discussion takes place about whether she can or cannot make a phone call. She eventually submits to an evidentiary breath test and the result is 0.098% BAC. When she is told that her driver's license is going to be confiscated, she questions how she will be able to get into the bars. Her criminal case has yet to be adjudicated.
