Visiting one of the four green sand beaches in the world was worth hiking in the hot sun. Olivine, a mineral with a green-ish tint, primarily makes up the sand on Papakōlea Green Sand Beach. We noticed more of the green color through our sunglasses compared to the naked eye. You can swim at this beach, but please be aware that there are no lifeguards and the currents can be strong. Remember to Leave No Trace!

Hi! We are Andrew and Sophie, two best friends living in and primarily exploring the wonderful state of Colorado.
This is a relatively new, personal series. We take you on trails throughout the US to simply share what different trails look like. If you are planning to travel to any of these destinations, we hope these videos can help you in the planning stages of your hikes! Please keep in mind, trail conditions are highly dependent on weather, available parking, wildlife, trail work, including closures, and more. Overall, this is meant to be a down-to-earth series that keeps it simple, showcasing what trails have to offer.

TRAIL INFORMATION
TRAIL: PAPAKOLEA GREEN SAND BEACH
Trailhead: There is no designated trailhead for this location, but a parking lot becomes obvious - you are NOT allowed to drive to the beach location
Location: Big Island, HI
Trail Stats (via AllTrails):
5.6 mile OUT & BACK
321 feet of elevation gain
Key notes for this trail:
Normal walking shoes are relatively fine for this hike, but be aware of the descent to the beach (it is very steep and you will slip without proper traction)
Parking is available where the trail starts, but there is no official trailhead (locals provide, at a price, a shuttle service to and from the beach's cliffside, otherwise you have to hike to this location)
This is a VERY popular location, get there early to get good parking and limit your time in increasing temperatures (no shade on route, bring your sunny day essentials)
DO NOT collect sand, rocks, etc; this is a fragile ecosystem and these are illegal to remove in the state of Hawaiʻi
See any ancient sites? Please respect these from a distance
The trail breaks off into different paths, just follow a path where you can see the shoreline and you'll make it just fine
The wind will hit you most of the hike, no matter which direction
DISCLAIMER: Our stats (portrayed at the end of the video) are dependent on our personal hike, due to detours or backtracking, and may not reflect website profiles for this trail, such as AllTrails, or personal tracking devices that you may use for your hike.
