STORYLINE:

European peace activists staged a sit-down protests in front of an Israeli tank on Monday as Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat remained under virtual house arrest.

In Jenin, as Israel's military curfew was temporarily lifted to let high school students sit final exams, the activists forced a showdown with one of the Israeli tanks in the city centre.

The foreign protesters sat down in the middle of the street and argued with the Israeli soldiers as local residents ran for cover.

Elsewhere, Palestinian children taunted Israeli soldiers guarding the tanks.

The children retreated when tank drivers revved their engines causing smoke to billow from their vehicles.

At one point a large armoured personnel character (APC) set up a smoke screen reducing visibility in the narrow alleyways to zero.

Israel's army is restricting the movement of more than a half million Palestinians - with round-the-clock curfews.

In Nablus, the largest city in the West Bank, there was no relief from the curfew and Israeli army patrols forced everyone to remain indoors.
