Böhm wurde 1661 in Hohenkirchen bei Ohrdruf geboren und erhielt von seinem Vater, einem Lehrer und Organisten, die erste musikalische Ausbildung. Nach dem Tode des Vaters im Jahre 1675 besuchte er die Lateinschule in Goldbach, von 1678 bis 1684 das Gymnasium in Gotha. Nach dem Studium an der Universität Jena verbrachte er einige Jahre in Hamburg, bevor er 1698 in das Organistenamt an der St. Johanniskirche in Lüneburg berufen wurde. In dieser Zeit war Johann Sebastian Bach in Lüneburg Freischüler des Michaelis-Klosters und sang als Diskantist im Mettenchor. Böhms Einfluss auf Bachs frühe Orgelwerke und Klaviersuiten lässt sich stilkritisch vermuten, doch nicht belegen. Die Stelle des Organisten hatte Böhm bis zu seinem Tod im Jahre 1733 inne.

Nur wenige Kompositionen Böhms sind überliefert. Dazu zählen vor allem seine Choralbearbeitungen und einige freie Präludien für die Orgel, aber auch Kantaten und geistliche Lieder. Ebenso wie Dietrich Buxtehude zählt auch Georg Böhm zu den bedeutendsten norddeutschen Komponisten zwischen dem späten 17. Jahrhundert und der Kunst Johann Sebastian Bachs. Er starb 1733 in Lüneburg.

Georg Böhm (1661-1733): Prelude and Fugue in C major

Böhm was born in Hohenkirchen near Ohrdruf in 1661 and received his first musical training from his father, a teacher and organist. After his father's death in 1675, he attended the Latin school in Goldbach and from 1678 to 1684 the secondary school in Gotha. After studying at the University of Jena, he spent a few years in Hamburg before being appointed organist at St. John's Church in Lüneburg in 1698. During this time, Johann Sebastian Bach was a free student at the Michaelis monastery in Lüneburg and sang as a discantist in the choir. Böhm's influence on Bach's early organ works and piano suites can be assumed from a stylistic point of view, but cannot be proven. Böhm held the post of organist until his death in 1733.

Only a few of Böhm's compositions have survived. These include above all his chorale preludes and some free preludes for the organ, but also cantatas and sacred songs. Like Dietrich Buxtehude, Georg Böhm is known as one of the most important North German composers between the late 17th century and the art of Johann Sebastian Bach. He died in Lüneburg in 1733.
