Light pillars appear when the reflection of sunlight, moonlight, or even streetlights interact with horizontally planar ice crystals that are present in the earth's atmosphere. The pillars can mostly be seen at night or sundown.

Light pillars appear when the reflection of sunlight or moonlight interact with horizontally planar ice crystals that are present in the earth's atmosphere. The pillars are most prominent at sundown or shortly after. I actually saw these first hand and thought I was in the middle of a sci-fi movie.
