Clifton House King’s Lynn - medieval merchant home with spectacular tower & 14th century undercroft!

Описание: Clifton House is the most important house in the historic town of King's Lynn. Its earliest fabrics date way back to the 13th century. The merchant house also features a five storey Elizabethan look out tower which was built in the 1570s. The tower was erected as a status symbol to entertain and impress clients. The top of the tower offers great panoramic views of the port and allowed watchmen to see ships returning allowing goods to be taken to market more quickly. Another interesting feature of Clifton House is the 14th-century vaulted undercroft. In the past wine was a very important part of King’s Lynn’s economy and subterranean cellars provided the desired secure storage for alcohol. The port town once traded with France, Spain, Madeira and the Canary Islands. Clifton House sits on Queen Street which used to be called ‘Winegate’. Unfortunately the introduction of trains had a negative impact on the port’s local economy and after 1850 the costly maintenance of the building began to stall. In the following decades Clifton House encountered some troublesome times during the 20th century. Baroness Fermoy (Princess Diana’s maternal grandmother) helped successfully campaign with the King’s Lynn Preservation Trust to prevent its proposed demolition to make way for a car park in 1962. Following this narrow escape it was determined (with the help of English Heritage) that Clifton House should be returned to a single family house. Clifton House is currently under the ownership of Doctor Simon Thurley and Doctor Anna Keay. Simon is the former Chief Executive of English Heritage and Anna is the Director of the Landmark Trust. They now offer guided tours of the property on selected dates throughout the year.
