Art Loeb Trail - Black Balsam Knob & Pilot Mountain Hike

Описание: Entering the trail at Gloucester Gap, we ascend Pilot Mountain and continue up the Art Loeb Trail to the summit of Black Balsam Knob. Along the hike we observe beautiful Rhododendrons, Flame Azaleas and Mountain Laurels. We are also visited by a Red-spotted Newt and an Eastern Towhee.

We spend two nights on the trail. The first night we found a great campsite near the summit of Sassafras Knob just north of Deep Gap Shelter. The second night we spent near the intersection of the Art Loeb Trail and Farlow Gap Trail.

This hike is great for seeing some of the best highlights along the Art Loeb Trail with a little less hiking distance. The vertical ascent is still a challenge; especially the northbound ascent of Pilot Mountain.

The Art Loeb Trail is an approximately 30 mile route located in the Pisgah National Forest of North Carolina, with trailheads at Davidson River Campground and Daniel Boone Boy Scout Camp. The trail winds through Shining Rock Wilderness and ascends several significant peaks including Black Balsam Knob, Tennent Mountain and Pilot Mountain.
