anti- (Greek) and ante- (Latin) prefixes | Word of the Week 17

Описание: The spelling of the prefixes anti and ante-, from Greek and Latin, can be confusing sometimes because they have identical pronunciations. “Ante-” gives us words such as anteroom, antebellum, and ancestor whereas “anti-” gives us antacid, antidote, and Antarctic. English throws a wrench into it, though with the word antipasto which, surprisingly, does not come from “anti-.”
