Tan Sau and Ba 霸
A lot of people do Tan Sau by simply placing a hand on the centre line with a forward force. Some even call it a “beggar’s hand”, when in fact it is a “tyrant’s hand”. There is so much more to it.
Tan Sau is about Ba 霸. It is about occupying the opponent’s space and taking over his balance. When done correctly, the opponent will not be able to get rid of or run away from your Tan Sau, nor can he generate enough power to resist you. You will be able to strike the opponent any time you want, and he cannot do anything about it. And you haven’t even used your other hand yet.
It’s a bit hard to show on video, but those who have attended my workshops would understand once they’ve been on the receiving end. Without Tan and Fook, Ba and Subdue, there is no Wing Chun.
