Exclusive! Nukeproof's future plans revealed! The MBR Show

Описание: Nukeproof’s new Belgium owners are set on growing the brand, developing new products and even building a new Megawatt e-bike in the not too distant future. That’s the message from our exclusive interview with Belgian Cycling Factory’s (BCF) Jochim Aerts, who now owns Nukeproof.
It’s a proper phoenix from the ashes story then, and in this video we talk about Jochim Aerts’ new ideas for Nukeproof. It begins with what BCF won’t do - sit on it.
“We are going to honor the brand,” he says. “We are going to bring back this beautiful legend. We will not kill the Nukeproof DNA, it will not become a sticker brand. Nukeproof fans will not be disappointed when they see what we’re doing.”
Sounds pretty exciting,but before we get into Nukeproof’s five year plans then, it’s useful to remember what’s happened over the past couple of years.
Frasers Group bought the award-winning mountain bike brand back in March 2024, after its parent company Wiggle CRC folded the previous year. Since then we’ve been wondering what would become of Nukeproof.
It’s been one of the best mountain bike brands of the last 10 years, and we missed its presence when it was mothballed back in 2023. Bikes like the Mega, the Giga, the Reactor, the Scout - all award winning mountain bikes - disappeared. Worse, Nukeproof was one of the most influential brands, pushing bikes in new directions and time and again redefining what it took to make the best bike.
Now they’re back, snapped up by BCF. If you’re into drop bar bikes you’ll probably know about them, they own Eddie Merkx bikes and founded Ridley over three decades ago. And for about 10 years now they’ve been looking for a mountain bike brand to fill that out.
BCF now owns everything from Nukeproof, all the names, the website, all the patents and designs, and all the old stock in Asia.
More importantly, they’ve also got the people to do it - Nukeproof is putting the band back together. Now working on the next generation of bikes are four ex-Nukeproof staff including Dale McMullan, the former head frame engineer responsible for kinematics and geometry.
Dale helped develop some of our favourite Nukeproof and Vitus bikes from the past 10 years, including the Megawatt from 2023, the last e-bike the brand made before it went bust.
What do we know about the new Megawatt then? Not much yet, except that the design process has started. Could it have the next generation of SRAM Powertrain motor? Jochim couldn’t say, but given the old Megawatt used this Powertrain it’s definitely a possibility.
What we know about that motor comes from piecing together information from a patent application, lodged last year by SRAM. It seemed to show a concentric design, with space for a battery to wrap around and in front of and below the motor. In this case there are 39 cells, and at 21Wh per cell that’s just over 800Wh.
Before we get too excited though, we’ve no idea if the patent will really lead to the next generation of SRAM motor, or indeed if the Megawatt will use it at all. What seems very likely though is that we’ll see the past model Megawatt back in production, exhibited at the Eurobike trade show, and available to buy as early as this autumn.
You won’t have to travel to Belgium to get hold of one either, BCF actually has a dealer network in the UK, which is exactly how Nukeproof will be sold. Under the old CRC Wiggle banner you could buy a Nukeproof online or through a bike shop, but now we’ll see bikes sold through BCF’s service center, dealer network, and global distribution partners.
Having immediate technical support is an important step in the Nukeproof journey, particularly if you’re buying and e-bike from the brand. It’s something direct sales brands like YT, Canyon and Propain have been working on in recent years, and all three now have bricks and motor showrooms and demo and service centres in the UK.
