In this episode of my series “Walks in Wiltshire”, I take a 4.5 mile “figure-of-eight” walk at from East Knoyle (located 6 miles North of Shaftesbury). Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Fiver.
I parked my car at the East Knoyle Village Hall (50p donation) and started my walk with a wander through the village itself – beginning at the Church of St Mary – and heading East to the site of the birth place of Sir Christopher Wren, the Wren Stone, the site of Knoyle House (now long gone) & Wren's Shop (the village shop).
My route then took me up Wise Lane and West towards Windmill Hill to visit the old Windmill (which is privately owned and not generally open to the public). I was fortunate to meet the two lovely owners of the Windmill (who were visiting) & they kindly allowed me to film – inside as well as outside – and the views from the top were amazing.
I continued Westwards to The Green but, alas, The Fox & Hounds Pub was permanently closed (I understand that it had been put up for sale a few months earlier).
I then headed Eastwards, past Clouds House and the little settlement of Milton and back to Wise Lane at East Knoyle. At this point I left the village & crossed the A350, past Park Farm and – after checking out the well preserved limekiln by the side of the road – headed South to Knoyle Ridge.
I eventually joined up with a section of the Wessex Ridgeway, and continued South along a bridleway to Upper Leigh Farm.
My final leg of my walk took me back over the A350 and in to East Knoyle from the Southern end.
I would like to express my gratitude to the owners of the Windmill for kindly allowing me to film there and for looking after Fiver whilst I was doing so (the stairs inside were far too steep for him!).
Do check out the British Pathe video, on Youtube, that showed some lovely old scenes at East Knoyle (including the old Knoyle House before it was demolished) at • Sir Christopher Wrens Birthplace Aka Sir C...
