Xylazine is a veterinary tranquilizer with a phenothiazine-like structure similar to the chemical structures of tricyclic antidepressants, the typical antipsychotic chlorpromazine (trade name Thorazine; the famous "shot in the butt" that you get if you're feeling feisty on a psych ward), and clonidine / medetomidine - alpha adrenergic agonists that were developed as blood pressure control agents, but which also aid with the restless leg syndrome (RLS), anxiety, hypertension, and other symptoms of opioid withdrawal.
Check out the full video - linked - for more information on the history, chemistry, neurobiology, and spread throughout the Continental U.S. of xylazine (tranq), including: A) The awful, Krokodil-like skin lesions that it causes, B) Its propensity to induce severe overdoses that are not effectively reversed with naloxone (Narcan), C) Its potentiation of the effects of fentanyl, and more.
