In the first part of the BBC Radio adaptation of *A Study in Scarlet*, titled "Revenge," Dr. John Watson returns from the Second Anglo-Afghan War and is introduced to Sherlock Holmes, with whom he decides to share rooms at 221B Baker Street. Their first case together involves a bizarre murder. A man named Enoch Drebber is found dead in an empty house with no visible injuries, and the word "RACHE" (German for "revenge") is scrawled in blood on the wall.
Holmes quickly deduces that the victim was poisoned and, after an elaborate search, discovers a woman's wedding ring at the crime scene. He places an advertisement in the newspapers about the ring, which is answered by a woman who turns out to be a young man in disguise, an accomplice of the murderer.
The plot thickens when a second murder occurs. Drebber's secretary, Joseph Stangerson, is also found dead, this time stabbed through the heart, with "RACHE" once again written above his body. Through his meticulous detective work, Holmes identifies and arrests the murderer, a cab driver named Jefferson Hope.
The episode concludes with the start of the second half of the story, which is a flashback to the American West, revealing the tragic backstory of Jefferson Hope and his motives for revenge against Drebber and Stangerson.
