"The Solitary Cyclist," a Sherlock Holmes story by Arthur Conan Doyle, follows Violet Smith, a young woman who seeks Holmes' help after being followed by a mysterious bearded man while cycling to and from her job as a music teacher. Violet, recently engaged to Cyril Morton, lives with her uncle’s friend, Bob Carruthers, and his associate, Jack Woodley, in a rural house. Holmes and Watson investigate, uncovering that Carruthers and Woodley, shady characters with ties to South Africa, are plotting to secure Violet’s inheritance by forcing her into a sham marriage.
