There's a terrible misconception about careers in art and it drives me nuts every time I hear it. This misconception is that careers in art are riskier or further out of reach than other trades. The most common place you'll hear this is when parents discourage their children from pursuing a career in the arts in favor of something more reliable. But, look around you. Everything you see was designed, the vast majority of it with an eye towards aesthetics and beauty. When I say everything, I mean everything. Whether it's the lug nuts on the underside of your car, your reading lamp or a painting by Picasso, there is a function and an aesthetic quality to it and those things didn't happen by accident. Knowing that design and aesthetics are integral to every single thing we see, hear, touch and smell every day of our lives, how could a career in the arts be any more or less challenging than anything else?
