【JICA Chair】How has Japan Achieved Universal Access to Safe Drinking Water? （Digest ver.）

Описание: In this video, we will present Japanese development experience in the water supply sector, titled “How has Japan Achieved Universal Access to Safe Drinking Water? — Japan’s Infrastructure Development: the Case in Urban Water Supply Systems.”

This lecture answers two questions.

The first question is, why was it possible to extend the water supply coverage to 98% of the total population in Japan, and why was it possible to supply safe drinking water 24 hours a day, every day?

Japan began construction of modern water systems in 1887, and despite the destruction of its infrastructure during World War II, it was able to provide all of its citizens with safe drinking water 24/7.

As a result,　cases of waterborne diseases and infant mortality rates drastically decreased, and people have been freed from the labor of fetching water.

The sanitary condition of their living environment has been significantly improved.

Prof. Takizawa reveals the reasons why it was possible to construct such high-quality water supply systems in Japan.

The second question is, what are the reasons that the capabilities of Japanese engineers developed successfully through learning foreign technologies during the process of modernization?

Construction of the modern water supply systems in Japan commenced under the supervision of foreign engineers, but soon after that, Japanese engineers took over the job of their foreign advisors.

Prof. Takizawa clarifies why Japan was able to raise engineers who acquired foreign technologies in such a short period.
