Presentation by Dr Danai Kontou, James Hodson & Emma Baker
Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, PhD Candidate & PhD Candidate
Redclaw crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus), first recorded in Kruger National Park in 2016, are rapidly expanding invasive freshwater species with serious ecological consequences. This seminar series explored the invasion from multiple perspectives: Dr Danai Kontou examines spread rates and population dynamics; James Hodson investigates how crayfish alternative fish communities and biodiversity; and Emma Baker uses long-term macroinvertebrate monitoring to predict ecosystem-level impacts and identify vulnerable taxa. Together, these talks provided a comprehensive view of how redclaw crayfish are reshaping freshwater ecosystems in Kruger National Park and inform strategies for proactive, adaptive management.
Seminar of 18 March.
