Artificial structures such as seawalls, harbours, and piers are becoming more common along coastlines around the world, placing increasing pressure on coastal ecosystems. One way to reduce these impacts is through the ‘greening of grey infrastructure’, which means designing or modifying built structures so they can also support marine life. By combining engineering, ecology, and creative design, this approach helps create space for nature on artificial shorelines while still meeting human needs. This project explores this approach in an effort to build the evidence around its use, by gathering social perceptions, synthesising existing knowledge, and exploring the use of nature-based solutions.
