Threatened Fish in the Rockies: îyârhe Nakodabi (Stoney Nakoda) Nations Relationships with Bull Trout (Salvelinus confluentus)
Janelle Marie Baker, William Snow
Athabasca University
This paper presents results from a series of ceremonies, community meetings, and interviews on the land with îyârhe Nakodabi (Stoney Nakoda) Elders regarding bull trout in the eastern slopes of the Rockies in what is now known as Alberta, Canada. Despite being the provincial fish, bull trout populations have declined dramatically since colonization. Stoney Nakoda Elders have shared stories of times of abundance of these important fish eaten at ceremonies, and they have taken us to the spawning streams and remote alpine lakes where bull trout thrive in cold temperatures and silt. We also share results of interviews with scientists who have studied and altered bull trout and their habitat as researchers, foresters, fisheries officers, and government researchers. We conclude with a description of hinderances on bull trout habitat in the eastern slopes of the Rockies.
