Coming down off Bodmin Moor as the snow thins out, we head towards Phoenix Mine.
This engine house is slightly unusual. Like most Cornish engine houses it housed the steam engine, but it also had offices built above, giving it an extra storey and a different appearance.
Along the way are deep linear earthworks. Some might be interpreted as defensive features or peak passes, but their alignment and depth strongly suggest mining-related workings, likely open stopes following a mineral lode. These were early exploratory features used to locate ore near the surface.
The area is now fenced as part of the World Heritage Site, but the scale of activity here is still easy to read in the landscape.
