On Oct. 27, 2021, the iSEE Congress "Circular Food Systems" continued with this session, a lunchtime Zoom webinar, discussing advancing environmental sustainability of our agriculture and food systems while continuing to increase agricultural productivity is a critical national priority. Improvements in technology, incentives from markets and appropriate policies combined with systems-oriented thinking are crucial to achieving this transformation. The session highlighted this pressing challenge and discussed strategies for addressing it from different disciplinary perspectives.
Attended by more than 135 people, the event was co-sponsored and co-hosted by the Council on Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics (C-FARE), and it was endorsed by the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA) and the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE).
Hosted by iSEE Interim Director Madhu Khanna, the session's panelists were ...
-- James Jones, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Systems Modeling, University of Florida, presenting "Transforming Food and Agricultural Systems Guided by Circular Economy Concepts"
-- Bruno Basso, MSU Foundation Professor of Crop Modeling and Land Use Sustainability, Michigan State University, presenting "“Novel Technologies for Enhancing Circularity in Grain Production Systems”
-- Charles Rice, Distinguished Professor of Soil Microbiology, Kansas State University, presenting "Transforming the Linear Agricultural and Food System to a Circular Bioeconomy"
-- David Zilberman, Robinson Chair and Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of California at Berkeley, presenting "Sustainable Development and the Circular Food System"
ABOUT CONGRESS: In this eighth iSEE Congress, we return to sustainable agriculture as a topic. Our modified “teach-in” event introduces the Illinois campus and community to cutting-edge thinking from highly influential scholars on advancing sustainability of our agriculture and food systems. Achieving this sustainability while continuing to increase agricultural productivity is a critical national priority. Through this conference, we aim to raise awareness of the national dialogue on sustainable agriculture and pathways for scientists, economists, and policymakers to collaborate in transitioning our agricultural system to one that reduces, reuses, and recycles waste.
