(14 Jul 2017) Prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, a major holy site in Jerusalem, were cancelled on Friday after three Palestinians opened fire at the site, killing two officers before being shot dead, police said.
Israel's police chief says two officers were killed in an attack by Palestinian assailants. Roni Alsheich says the policemen died of wounds sustained in the attack earlier Friday.
Police said the site was cleared of people on Friday - the highlight of the Muslim religious week. The site typically draws tens of thousands of worshippers who flock to the compound from Israel and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
The compound is the holiest site in Judaism and the third-holiest in Islam.
The site has been a flashpoint for violence in the past, with friction there sparking major rounds of Israeli-Palestinian violence.
