Israeli troops ringed the Tomb of the Patriarch in Hebron and barred Jews from entering the disputed shrine as Moslem worshippers gathered for Ramadan prayers inside.
The Tomb, or the Ibrahimi Mosque as it is also known, was the site of last year's shooting spree in which a right-wing Jewish settler killed 29 Moslems.
Israeli soldiers were on high alert Tuesday at the Mosque which is
considered a holy place to both Israelis and Palestinians.
Security was tight around the fortress-like Tomb.
Under new arrangements, Moslems and Jews pray separately and on different holidays.
Worshippers even have different entrances depending on their religion.
Israeli settlers, laying claim to the place of worship, gathered outside to demonstrate against the opening of the Tomb to Moslem worshippers.
This is the site of the infamous Mosque Massacre of February 1994 in which an extremist right-wing settler, Baruch Goldstein, killed 29 Moslem worshippers during Friday prayers.

Tensions in the city of Hebron have been running high ever since.
Last week, following the bombing at Beit Lid, an army checkpoint was set up near the entrance to Hebron.
The checkpoint prevents a large number of Moslem worshippers from
leaving Hebron and going to prayer at the Al-Aksa Mosque in
Jerusalem.
