STORYLINE
One of Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev''s brothers insisted on Wednesday that all his actions were "lawful" in the wake of last week''s deadly protests.
Zhanybek Bakiyev was head of the state security guard service and is accused by the opposition of ordering his men to open fire on peaceful demonstrators in the capital Bishkek on April 7.
At least 83 people died after the protest rally exploded into gunfire.
"I don''t consider myself guilty of what happened. I say as a lawyer that all my actions were lawful," Zhanybek Bakiyev told The Associated Press in the family stronghold village of Teyit on Wednesday.
"We insist an independent commission should carry out an investigation, and assess the actions by the President and all those who were there," he said, adding that they were "prepared to bear any responsibility".
Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who has taken refuge in his home village far from the capital Bishkek, reacted on Wednesday to widespread allegations that his relatives profited hugely and improperly from his nearly five years in office.
"Each of my brothers are responsible for the decisions they took - before the law and before the people" he said.
He echoed Zhanybek saying they were ready to assume responsibility "if they did something unlawful".
"But the point at issue is not judiciary investigation. The point at issue is basic safety. The chase is after all (of us)," Kurmanbek Bakiyev said.
Bakiyev fled the capital on April 7 after demonstrators seized government buildings.
Bakiyev has repeatedly offered to engage in talks.
