Located 70 km southwest of Addis Ababa, Adadi Mariam is a stunning semi-monolithic church carved from solid rock in the 12th century. Commissioned by King Lalibela, a saint in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, this church stands as a testament to the incredible architectural and spiritual endeavors of the time. According to local tradition, King Lalibela's vision and blessings from St. Gebre Menfes Kidus inspired the construction of this sacred site. Despite facing damage over centuries, recent restoration efforts, supported by Switzerland, have helped preserve its grandeur.

These stelae, marking a large prehistoric burial complex, date between the 10th and 15th centuries. Their exact purpose and the builders' identity remain a mystery, adding to the site's allure.
