重 1: zhong4 'heavy, weighty, important serious'; 2: chong2 're-, repetitive action, again'.
The oldest Oracle bone script versions of the character show weights on of a supporting rod or some sort of a weighing machine. The later Seal script version of the character had different components. It was formed by 人 ren2 'person' at the top, 東 dong1 'east' in the middle and 土 tu3 'earth, soil' at the bottom. This was the changed again, when re-written into the modern form (重).
It is a very common phonetic element: 種 zhong3 'kind, type'(semantic element on the left side 禾 he2 'grain'), 腫 zhong3 'swollen' (semantic 肉 rou4 'flesh', written as 月 when on the left side or at the bottom of characters), 衝 chong1 'charge, rush' (semantic 行 xing2 -- 'to go'), 動 dong4 'move' (semantic 力 li4 'strenght').
Ancient Chinese pronunciation: d'iwong
Cantonese pronunciation: t'śung
Japanese pronunciation: t'śō, d'źū
