Not all coronary blockage shows up with the most common symptom of chest pain. For example, some patients -- particularly those who are diabetic or female -- may suffer from upset stomach, dizziness or pain in their back, jaw or shoulders, says Talal Attar, MD, FACC, an interventional cardiologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
Blockages may be initially diagnosed with non-invasive procedures, like a stress test or EKG. However, if there is an abnormal stress test or if suspicion of blockage is high, heart catheterization may be required. Dr. Attar explains that when blockage discovered is mild, no intervention is necessary, other than control of risk factors. When blockage is more severe—80 percent or higher—intervention is needed.
