LAKE BLED in SLOVENIA | Is This Europe’s Most Incredible Lake?

On a crisp wintry morning in the Julian Alps I decided to take a walk around Lake Bled – it’s a varied but interesting path that passes through the town itself, along by the church and up to Bled Castle. Things got a lot quieter from there as the trail continued alongside the water’s edge through woodland and over a traditional wooden boardwalk. I could see Bled Island almost continuously throughout the day & it looked magnificent from all angles.

The best viewpoint I found however was a place called Mala Osojnica which was part of a trail that weaved past a few wooden houses at the bottom of a hill and into the trees.

The path zigzagged up the mountainside for 20 to 30 minutes and the snow made the elevation gain all the more challenging. There was a crazy steep set of steps close to the top (more like a ladder I’d say!). The views were worth it however! When I reached the top it was definitely a contender for the best view of Lake Bled.

The frozen landscape was breathtaking with a picturesque island sitting silently in the cold still waters. The dramatic snow peaked mountains of the Julian Alps in the background made it nearly impossible to head back down – it was one of those perfect moments from my European travels.

The day ended with a walk around town in search of a reasonably priced meal followed by a relaxing yet cold visit to my first ice hockey (HKMK Bled) game in Slovenia.
