Hiking in Slovenia is always a treat. In this vlog I take you along the trail to Krn Lake (Krnsko jezero), a true gem of Triglav National Park.
📍 Krnsko jezero / Krn Lake hike
• Starting point: Dom dr. Klementa Juga v Lepeni
• Nearest parking: 46°18'14.9"N 13°40'54.6"E
• Starting elevation: ~700 m
• Highest point: 1,391 m
• Elevation gain: ~691 m
• Time: ~2 h 30 min (one way)
• Path type: forest trail, rocky (wear hiking shoes)
• Mountain huts: Planinski dom pri Krnskih jezerih (1,385 m), Gomiščkovo zavetišče na Krnu (2,182 m)
🌿 Tip: don’t forget to also visit Dupljesko jezero.
Krnsko jezero is Slovenia’s largest high-mountain lake and truly a sight to see. This glacial lake lies in the Julian Alps, inside Triglav National Park, with Mt. Krn rising just behind it. The clear alpine water and mountain backdrop make it a perfect spot to pause and take in the views. After your visit to Lake Krn, you can stop at Planinski dom pri Krnskih jezerih (1,385 m) for a refreshment or a traditional Slovenian mountain meal.
The lake itself stretches nearly 400 metres in length, 150 metres in width, and reaches a depth of up to 17 metres. Beneath the surface, the ecosystem is thriving, with about 40 plant species (mostly algae) and 24 animal species such as crayfish.
To protect this fragile environment, entering the water is not allowed under Triglav National Park rules. That means no swimming and no dogs. Even dipping your feet can be enough to upset the balance of the lake.
On the way back, it’s worth making a short detour to Dupljesko jezero, another alpine lake just beyond the mountain hut. The surrounding meadow (Planina Duplje) is beautiful, but do stay cautious as snakes can hide in the tall grasses.
Once back in the valley, the emerald Soča River is the perfect place to cool down. Soak your feet after the hike, or take a full plunge if you’re up for it.
Lake Krn makes for a perfect day hike from the Soča Valley towns of Bovec, Kobarid, or Tolmin. You can also come from Ljubljana or Bled and cross the stunning Vršič Pass, which offers incredible views of the Julian Alps.
