Pyridines occur widely in natural and synthetic products, so there is wide interest in routes for their synthesis. There are also many ways of achieving the synthesis of a pyridine ring. Enough quantity of Pyridine and simple Pyridine alkyl deris were obtained from coal tar. Nowadays, pyridine is being obtained synthetically. It can be produced commercially by the gas phase interaction of a mixture of crotonaldehyde, formaldehyde, steam, air and NH3 on silica-alumina catalyst at 400oC in a yield of about 60-70%. A large # of synthetic procedures, however, exist for the prepn of pyridines in the laboratory.

The various methods of synthesis of pyridine and its deris are discussed as follows:
1. Synthesis via Condensation reactions (5-6)
2. Synthesis via Rearrangement reactions (2)
3. Synthesis via Cycloaddition reactions (7)
4. Synthesis via transformation of other heterocycles (4)
5. Miscellaneous methods of preparation
