The Strategies of Female Patronage: Vittoria della Rovere, Grand Duchess of Tuscany
Vittoria della Rovere (1622-1694), Grand Duchess of Tuscany, was an active patron of the arts and spiritual philanthropist. Her discriminating and avant-garde tastes guided her patronage and collecting of the works of the major artists of the day. She also engaged in building projects. This talk, based on Dr. Modesti's recent monograph, Women’s Patronage and Gendered Cultural Networks in Early Modern Europe. Vittoria della Rovere, Grand Duchess of Tuscany (Routledge, 2020), will explore the strategies of female patronage adopted by Vittoria, with particular focus on her support of women, as this was a strong aspect of her cultural and philanthropic activities.
Adelina Modesti is an art historian and Senior Fellow in the School of Culture and Communication at Melbourne University, and researcher with the ACIS-IDEA digital humanities project "Textiles, Trade and Meaning in the Courts of Early Modern Italy during the time of Isabella d’Este."
