Why is the National Trust neglecting farmland?

Описание: Episode 86 - Oxburgh Hall. this week we have a breather from takign about regenerative farming to look at Oxburgh Hall, asking why so much land in Norfolk seems to have been taken out of use. We have a brief history of the aristocracy in the modern era culminating in many of their houses being sold thanks to Lloyd George's death duties, becoming schools or hospitals or coming into the custody of the National Trust. At Oxbergh the National Trust claim the parkland had been cultivated under arable farming and it is being 'restored' to the 19th cenutry when 'the landscape was at its peak'. We look at the evidence for this, ask if the landscape was at it's peak in the 19th century, whether parkland is optimal for nature restoration (given it's history with the Black Act etc), and why a landscape designed for nature feels the need to look back. We also look at books in the library and make a cheeky suggestion about the political leanings of the National Trust Collection.
