Episode 51: Where are they now? Aristocrat edition. A brief look at some of the behaviour of large landowners since the war. As the socialist postwar settlement was established in Britain and society was intended to become more equal, many aristocrats didn’t feel welcome anymore. We discuss Lord Lymington and Major Beaumont’s decision to leave the country. We discuss the landholdings of many institutions and individuals detailed in Guy Shrubshole’s book Who Owns England? like the Church of England, the National Trust, Oxford and Cambridge’s colleges, The Forestry Commission, investors like James Dyson and aristocrats like Lymington’s family at farleigh. We also look at what has changed, and why Britain now seems to invite large landowners where they were once deterred.
