This field recording ambiance was taken along the shore of Lake Biwa in Hama-Otsu Nagisa Park near Shimanoseki Station at 11 am on November 15th, 2025. This view looks out across the lake toward the Lake Biwa Otsu Prince Hotel but the primary subject is a large group of ducks and other waterfowl glide around near the near shoreline.
Lake Biwa is Japan’s largest freshwater lake, holding roughly 1/6 of the country’s fresh surface water. It is also one of the oldest lakes in the world, and its waters support a diverse ecosystem. Along the shore, waterfowl like these ducks are common year-round, and many species rest or forage here during migration seasons. The shallow water and shoreline grasses provide feeding and resting habitat for these birds, adding a living layer to the calm lakeside ambience.
