Poor weather on each summit didn't take away form the awe and adventure of hiking two of Hokkaido's famous mountains. Mount Yotei is also known as Ezo Fuji (Hokkaido's Mt. Fuji) and it bears a striking resemblance, even if a bit smaller. A mix of three trains take you to the ski town of Niseko. A long road walk from the No Place Lodge and then a steep hike up the Makkari route takes you to the broad crater rim at 1,898m.
After a night in Sapporo, then Asahikawa, I was off to hike up the tallest mountain in northern Japan, Asahi Dake. Poor weather (heavy rain) made the gondola an easy choice, and waiting an hour for rain to subside meant a shortened day, summiting only Asahi rather than the additional 3 peaks planned. Clouds sat on summit made trekking further to be done another day.
Both mountains are among the 100 Famous Mountains of Japan (Hyakumeizan / 日本百名山)
