Welcome friends! Today on The Old Cookbook Show, we’re cooking a recipe with one of the best names I’ve ever seen: Conkeedoodle. This dish comes from the United Farm Women of Alberta Cookbook, 5th edition (1946), a well-loved community cookbook first published in 1928.
This hearty casserole-style recipe uses beef, onions, macaroni, and tomatoes — simple ingredients that would have been staples in prairie kitchens during hard times. Like many Depression-era and post-war recipes, it’s frugal, filling, and leaves plenty of room for creativity.
I’ll show you how the original recipe was written, cook it up in a cast iron pan, and then we’ll taste-test it together. Spoiler: it’s a solid base, but it definitely needs a little help with seasoning!
Do you know what “Conkeedoodle” means or where the name comes from? Let us know in the comments — we’d love to hear your thoughts!
