Routines are an important part of any classroom, and the corrections classroom is no exception. Examples of a daily schedule and student expectations will be shared. In addition, working with adult emerging readers in the corrections classroom poses unique challenges. I will share the activities my students do every day, as well as the curriculum that has helped incarcerated adult students improve reading skills. These activities and curriculum ideas help students demonstrate growth in the areas of phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension-the foundations of learning in all subject areas and pathways. There will be time for participants to share ideas with the group, and discussion is encouraged.
Objectives:
Share routines used to keep learners engaged throughout the class time
Share resources and activities used in a corrections classroom of emerging readers with ideas on how to differentiate for all levels of learners
Provide curriculum ideas for adults who read at an emerging level
Student Level: Beginning ABE
