Admitting what we do not know is a sign of strength—and fosters more constructive, civil dialogue. Jason Marsh of the Greater Good Science Center defines intellectual humility not as the act of changing one’s mind, but as the disciplined ability to engage with opposing views without immediate defensiveness or dismissal. By recognizing the physiological "rush" of a challenged worldview and choosing to listen before responding, individuals can achieve greater personal accuracy and stronger interpersonal connections.
Jason Marsh is the executive director of UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center (GGSC) and the founding editor in chief of the center’s award-winning online magazine, Greater Good. Over more than two decades at the GGSC, he has grown the organization from a small university-based center to an internationally recognized authority on "the science of a meaningful life," reaching tens of millions of people worldwide. He was the founding producer of the GGSC's flagship online course and podcast—both called The Science of Happiness—and he co-created the center’s Bridging Differences Playbook and companion online course. Time has named him one of "27 People Bridging Divides Across America."
